Heathrow Airport: Transportation Guide

If you have ever been in London, probably Heathrow was your arriving point. The busiest airport in the United Kingdom and the busiest airport by passenger traffic in whole Europe, Heathrow reported a total of 73.4 million passengers in 2014 and the number has probably increased since then.

The actual airport is situated 14 miles west of Central London. With its two parallel runways and a total of four operational terminals, the airport covers 12.14 square kilometers.

The London transportation system is fairly reliable. There are different options, depending on your budget and personal preferences. However, getting the fastest and easiest way from Central London to the airport and vise versa can be achieved in several ways.

1. London Underground

It’s fast. It’s reliable. It’s cheap. For about 45 minutes you can get to pretty much any hotel, situated in the center of the capital. The gap between trains is about 5 minutes, so if you couldn’t catch the one you though you will, you won’t have to wait much longer. Its important to keep in mind the Tube gets busy and crowded around pick hours and is not very convenient if you travel with lots of luggage.

2. Heathrow Express

With about 15 minutes in-between trains, you can reach the airport and be on time for your flight or get to the heart of London – Paddington Station. This is the Heathrow Express – a dedicated airport train. It’s not the cheapest option, but will give you the comfort of not having to wonder around escalators with all of your suitcases and bags. However, if you want to save up some cash, you can always choose the underground.

3. Local Bus Lines

If you want to experience the city vibes by taking a bus,  it’s very much possible and not that inconvenient at all. It’s important to keep in mind that cash is no longer accepted and you can choose from four options: an oyster card, a visitor oyster card, a day travelcard or a contactless card payment.

4. Airport Transfer

Like most big and busy airports, Heathrow does offer an airport transfer services. You can either choose renting a car, transferring for families and larger groups or tailored transferring option if you travel with plenty of luggage. A cheaper and very a popular alternative recently are the minicabs. Minicabs are budget-friendly, reliable and fast. For a fixed price, you can securely reach pretty much any London area without worrying about missing your train or flight, or having to deal with the hassle of travelling with more than one suitcase.
